This work reconstructs the 1887 Christmas Eve church fire through research of archival photographs and historical paintings at Västerbottens Museum. The fire consumed the church in less than an hour, a precursor to the catastrophic 1888 summer fire that destroyed the entire city. The painting captures the dramatic moment: frozen harbour reflecting flames, silhouetted buildings, winter night sky. The vertical tower dominates the composition, emphasising architectural loss against the horizontal town layout. This historical documentation combines Belgian architectural training with Swedish cultural preservation, translating period sources into a contemporary visual narrative that honours local memory.
