Art & Architecture
I take an image and dissect it. Layer by layer, like a microscopic examination looking deeper and deeper into the fabric of reality.
What remains is not actually an abstraction.
It isa hidden structure, things that were always there.
Artistic Practice
Architecture
The architectural portfolio reflects a 25-year search into the ever-transforming built space and the human being who experiences it. Architecture as a fine line between pattern detection and alienation.
Contemporary Art
Unravelling the fabric of reality through painting and mixed media. Each work is a search for the definition of the depicted image. After the dissection comes the fermentation, like transforming grapes into wine. The visible world is slowly reworked until something deeper emerges.
Artist Architect
Bart Demeestere is a Belgian architect and artist, living and working in Sävar, a part of Umeå in northern Sweden.
Architecture and art are two sides of the same sphere, where the boundaries are artificial and hard to define.
For me, that sphere is a whole, a continuously self-renewing world where I search for a new definition of reality.
Working as an architect for a long time taught me one thing above all: What we see, what we think we see and what we finally store as a memory are rarely the same.
Our environment is built on impressions and on expectations of impressions. Refining those impressions brings balance to the spaces we inhabit. It is a search for a deeper order within the chaos of daily experience.
The urge to organise that chaos never left me. It evolved and attached itself to a broader field of expression. There is no border between my architecture and my art.
Both are manifestations of the same primal urge.
