The fire consumed the church in less than an hour, a precursor to the catastrophic 1888 summer fire that destroyed the entire city. The painting captures the dramatic moment: frozen harbour reflecting flames, silhouetted buildings, winter night sky. The vertical tower dominates the composition, emphasising architectural loss against the horizontal town layout.
