Studying to get better in Swedish rural architecture.

This book about rural architecture I bought today is very interesting. It is called “Landtmannabyggnader” by the author C.E. Löfvanskiöld and further has an appendix of his successor P.A. Petterson. It also is an incredibly nice summary of rural architecture in Sweden. This book contains inspiration and a lot of knowledge concerning form and detailing. It even contains work drawings on a scale of 1:1. Löfvanskiöld was a renowned Swedish architect from the 19th century who lived and worked in Västergötland.
You can find out more about him here:

Book about Swedish rural architecture

For me, this book is a great resource to create so-called “snickarglädje”. In fact, this is the Swedish name for wood ornaments used on the many beautiful houses in this country. Sadly enough, many of those ornaments got damaged or disappeared over time. I already had the pleasure of remaking some of those ornaments. In normal circumstances, I make templates of the original one and make a copy. But sometimes there is not enough information left to actually do this. For this reason it is important to have historical resources. For example this book provides structured information, so I am able to restore the “snickarglädje” of historical buildings, even when they have disappeared.

I made a Facebook post about a project where I made an actual template and a copy of ornaments from around 1800.
